Apple Debuts the New iPhone 4.0 Operating System
It’s about time: Apple users will soon be able to use multitasking on their iPhones. Yesterday, Apple unveiled the iPhone 4.0 operating system. While the new OS 4 beta software is currently only available for iPhone Developer Program members, Apple plans to release the upgrade as a software update this summer. However, an iPad version of the new operating system likely won’t come out until this fall.
Steve Jobs, the famous CEO of Apple, announced the release of the OS 4 at a recent press conference. While acknowledging that Apple is not the first company to introduce multitasking, Jobs provided an adequate explanation for the delay. “It’s really easy to implement multitasking in a way that drains battery life. If you don’t do it just right your phone’s going to feel sluggish and your battery life is going to go way down. We’ve figured out how to implement multitasking of third-party apps and avoid those things.”
So it sounds like the wait was well worth it. And moreover, the new OS 4 includes other goodies not found in previous versions. For example, users will be allowed to download iBooks, more easily switch between apps, and organize their apps into folders. Needless to say, Apple users will find a lot more goodies to enjoy with the iPhone OS 4.
